I said thought that his trainers are the most ugly trainers I've ever seen. I told him that if there is a hell of fashion, he will burn there. I also said that the perfume he liked smelled like a car air freshener. I hung the phone up on him, gave him a hard time and acted like a woman menstruating for her last time just because I was having some crap days.
However,

Dearest Vau-chan surprised me today with a box of Venchi chocolates ( making crazy bit**es happy since 1878), that he hid in my bag, so I found them on my way home, while reaching for my iPod.

No. Seriously. There is something about this guy that makes me fall in love with him.

2009.11.04 ひとりごと：　An empty chair <<11:43

My grandpa taught me to ride a bike, to use a vise, a glue gun and a fretsaw.
He told me that sweets are good and a lunch is not complete without a glass of wine mixed with soda. Because he was a marine, I had free access to all the ships in the small harbor. He also let me play with his...tools, including a shiv. And one thing that's making my bag slightly heavier, is his old pocket knife with red plastic handles.
He passed away last Monday. He was 83.

Just because I needed to take my mind off things adore Arashi, I decided to do justice for Aiba-kun...as I think that from all the 5 Arashi-s, he's a bit left behind.

Well, it has been a while since I translated something from Japanese to English, that's why translating this interview was quite a challenge. Feel free to comment and correct any mistakes you may find.

■新しいタイプの時代劇に挑戦！
Challenge for a new type of historical drama!

Q:時代劇とはいえ、現代にも通じるストーリーになっていましたね。
Even if it is a historical drama, the story is set in present times, ne

言葉遣いなどに関しては、どちらかというと現代に近いと思いました。確かにまったく新しいタイプの時代劇だとは思いましたが、どういうことをやろうとしているのかっていうのは把握していたので、あまり違和感はありませんでした。
About the vocabulary, I thought that is quite similar to the one we use nowadays. There was almost nothing unpleasant, and certainly what you tried was to understand [and act] in a new type of historical drama.

Q:キャラクターに入り込む瞬間をどのように作るんでしょう？　今回は、衣装がとても印象的でしたが、衣装でスイッチを入れ替えることはあるのでしょうか？
Q: How do you prepare the moment when you become one with the character? How was it this time? Did the costumes have a great impact, or did you use the costumes to switch [between reality and the play]?

この作品うんぬんのことではなく、そのキャラクターの衣装を着るとテンションが上がりますね。
This can’t be said only about this play; tension always rises when you put on some character’s clothes.

Q:映画全体の撮影を通して、満足感はありましたか？
Were you satisfied, through the whole film?

自分の考えとしては、満足した芝居ができてしまったら役者はやめてしまえばいいと思っているんです。できないから面白いんじゃないかと思っています。
I personally think that would be better for the actor to hold back/ to quit, if he acts for satisfaction only. I think it’s interesting, but I cannot do it.


■記憶を失うほど大変だったシーンが……!?
A scene hard enough to lose your memory…!?

Q:演じながら記憶をなくしてしまった瞬間があったと伺ったんですが、それはどんなシーンの撮影のときだったのでしょうか？
It was said that while acting, there was a moment when you had a loss of memory. During what scene did it happen?




そ のシーンは、全部カットされちゃったんですけど、沼に阿古を助けに行って、ぼろぼろになっている阿古を見つけ、「一緒に生きよう」って言うシーンです。そ の後、阿古にはじき飛ばされて、それでも彼女のことを追っかけて、沼の中に入って行ったんです。底なし沼の中に体が沈んでいく阿古を助けに行って、蘇生さ せるというシーンでした。
That scene was cut off; it’s that kind of scene when I go into the swamp to help Ako, find worn out Ako and tell her “Let’s live together”. After that, I ran after Ako because she was still being chased and I went into the swamp. I went to help Ako whose body was sinking into the bottomless swamp, it was a reviving scene .

Q:そのときに記憶をなくしてしまったんですか？
At that time you lost your memory?

自 分でもそんなこと初めてだったんで、そこまで没頭できる瞬間があったんだっていう、すごい喜びを感じました。「よーい、スタート」って言われて、走って阿 古を追いかけて行ったのは覚えてるんですけど、次に気が付いたらもうお風呂に入っていたんです。氷点下の中で撮影していたので、すぐそばにお風呂を用意し てあったんです。芝居をした後に衣装のままで入ったら、涙が止まらなくなっちゃって。「あれ？　もう終わっている」みたいな感じでしたね。
It was the first time when I found myself so absorbed, and I was very happy. They said “Ready: Start!”, and I remember Ako running because she was chased; the next thing I remember is me having a hot bath. We were filming [outside] in freezing cold, that’s why a warm bath was prepared nearby. Tears couldn’t be stopped, when I entered [the bath], with my costume still on after filming the scene. I had the feeling of :” Eh?! It’s over already”.

Q:そのシーンがカットされてしまったことがわかったときは、ショックじゃなかったですか？
Weren’t you shocked to find out that the scene was cut?

編集でそういうことが起こるのはしょうがないことですからね。まあ最初にカットされてしまったことがわかったときは「うっそー」と思いました。あんな大変だったのに……って（笑）。
There is nothing to do. These things happen when you edit the film. Well, when I found out that the scene was cut, I thought “Oh, my God！”. It was that hard… (laughs)


■松方弘樹からの貴重なアドバイス
Valuable advice from Matsukata Hiroki

Q:特に印象に残っているシーンはありますか？
Are there any particularly impressive scenes? / Were you impressed by any scene in particular?

印 象に残っているシーンはいっぱいありますね。毎日毎日大変だったし。でも、そういうエピソードでいえば、やっぱり松方弘樹さんと立ち回りができたのが、す ごく勉強になりました。松方さんが僕らくらいのころは、まさに時代劇全盛期。毎日刀を振り続けていたそうで、そんな人にかなうわけがないですよね。でもう まい人が相手だと、コッチもうまく見せてもらえるんです。
There are a lot of impressive scenes. Every day was great. But, if I am to talk about one episode in particular, I would say that I learned a lot from working together with Mr. Matsutaka Hiroki. Mr. Matsutaka has much more experience with historical dramas than us, who are new comers. We can say that he still has something to say, and it’s not like you meet every day such a [great] person. He is a skilled partner, and you can see a lot of Koch as well.

Q:松方さんからもらったアドバイスで、一番ためになったことは何でしたか？
What was the best advice that you received from Mr. Matsutaka?

とても多くのことをアドバイスしてもらいました。細かなしぐさについても教えてもらいました。ここは力を抜いてもいいとか、ここだけ決めればかっこ良く見えるとか、そういう発見があったのはすごく良かったですね。
I received many pieces of advice. I learned about the fine (detailed”) gestures. Here you can loosen up a bit, or if you concentrate more [the scene] will get better；it was great to discover things like these.

Q:松方さんといえば、当時の俳優さんでもプレイボーイといわれていた方ですが、役者の遊びに関するアドバイスはありましたか？
Speaking of Mr. Matsutaka, back in those days was said to be a playboy actor; did you receive any advice of how an actor should ‘play’?

いろいろ話は聞きましたよ。でも時代が違いますからね。僕がそんなことしたら、すぐ写真週刊誌に撮られちゃうでしょうね（笑）。
I heard many stories. However, those were different times. If I did such things, I would hit the tabloids (laughs)
